Quick and Easy Roller Blind Makeover

Do you have a plain, yet useful blackout roller blind? They are the only solution in our dormer windows so we got them when we moved in six years ago. We chose white so they’d go with anything, but I wanted to make ours look a little more interesting, and also match the oversized origami lampshade I made earlier in the year. I (briefly) considered painting small stripes onto it. But the look of horror on my friend’s face when I casually mentioned it made me think again, he he. So I thought I’ve give vinyl wall stickers a try. Read on for my quick and easy roller blind makeover.
Why I Love Nutmeg Studio Wall Stickers
I’ve used frame-shaped wall stickers from Nutmeg Studio on my children’s wall. They still look perfect several years on, so I thought they’d be perfect to try. On Nutmeg Studio’s website it says they will stick to any smooth surface. My blind has a slight texture on it, so I wasn’t sure if it would work. But I thought it was definitely worth a try. I could always use them somewhere else, or glue them on if they didn’t stick.
My Nutmeg Wall Stickers come in a pack of 207 sprinkles, for £18 (find them here) and they come in 32 colours, including gold, silver and copper metallic finish. It’s lucky I’d already made my monochrome lampshade, or I’d never have been able to choose!
They are really high quality and have a matte finish that looks so chic and modern. To use, you just peel them off the backing paper, and stick them on! It couldn’t be easier.
The First Step to My Roller Blind Makeover
I started by cleaning my blind and leaving it to dry. It had a couple of grubby patches but they came off quite easily. Then I was ready to start sticking.
I started off by peeling one sticker off and sticking it on the blind. I left it for a few days to see if it would peel off. It stayed. Hoorah!
Building The Pattern
My giant origami lampshade has a scattered sprinkles look. I thought that recreating that would be a bit overwhelming on such a large space as a blind, so I decided to go for a close sprinkle at the bottom, and gradually let it spread out as I moved up the bling. I tried not to overthink it and kept it as organic as I could.
Here you can see how I built up the scattered pattern, working my way across, and then up the blind. I wound the blind down as I went.

It took me about 30 minutes to stick these on, making it a really quick and easy makeover.
I pressed each vinyl wall sticker on firmly, either against the window behind, or on my hand where there was a window frame.
The Finished Roller Blind Makeover
I’m so happy with my customised roller blind. It makes such a difference, especially when the blind is wound down. Before, it was a big expanse of white. Now it’s got a fun and eye catching scattered confetti pattern, and I think it complements my handmade origami lampshade perfectly!
Do The Stickers Stay Stuck?
I wasn’t sure whether the stickers would stay stuck to the slightly textured surface of my roller blind as they are designed to work on smooth surfaces. But I’m delighted to report that they are still stuck, a month after application.
Some of them vertically-spaced stickers are coming up at one end, or in the very centre, as you can see on this close up. I presume that’s because the blind gets pulled up and down each day — the horizontal ones have all stayed on perfectly. So if you’re going to do your own roller blind makeover, I’d recommend placing the stickers horizontally, or using larger stickers.
