When you’re moving over to a more eco friendly and ethical life, some things are really easy. Like swapping disposable cotton pads for reusables. Or taking a refillable bottle instead of getting plastic disposable bottles. (I have 30+ easy plastic free swaps if you want some more ideas!) But some eco swaps can be so hard you might tempted to give up. For me, natural deodorant is definitely in that camp. When you try a zero waste natural deodorant that doesn’t work, it’s not only embarrassing, it’s also a waste of money. And a waste of the actual product too. Doubly annoying when you’re trying to avoid waste!

The Natural Deodorant Co Clean and Active Deodorant Balm Reviews

But I have found a few zero waste natural deodorants that actually do work, and now I’d like to introduce you to my favourite!

Meet the Natural Deodorant Co.’s plastic free, zero waste, toxin free, natural deodorant that has never let me down.

What’s the Difference Between Deodorant and Anti-Perspirant?

Conventional anti-perspirants deodorants stop you sweating. They generally use aluminium salts to block the pores, to stop the sweat from escaping. And if sweat does escape, the deodorant minimises the small caused when sweat reacts with the air, creating odour. So the anti-perspirant stops the sweat from leaving your arm pit. But when it does come through, the deodorant part is needed.

Deodorants don’t stop you sweating. They work by killing the odour causing bacteria, meaning you can still sweat naturally, without worrying about the smell. Many conventional deodorants use alcohol to kill bacteria, which is effective, but also harsh, killing the other natural bacteria in your skin too. Ever had stinging underarms when you’ve just shaved? It’s probably the alcohol going into your open pores, ouch!

Why Choose a Natural Deodorant?

Natural deodorant will not stop you sweating, as it’s not an anti-perspirant. Instead, this deodorant neutralises the smell that happens when sweat comes into contact with bacteria.

Most anti-perspirant deodorants contain ingredients that I choose not to put on my skin, or at least minimise as much as I can. These ingredients include alcohol, triclosan, aluminium, pthalates, parabens, propylene glycol and artificial fragrances.

The great news is that there are natural deodorants that work so well to eliminate the whiffs, whist allowing your body to do what it should do: sweat. I know this may not be for everyone, and that’s fine. But if you are looking for a natural deodorant that actually works, and doesn’t make your skin react, this is for you!

Enter The Natural Deodorant Co.: Zero Waste Natural Deodorant

I’ve been using The Natural Deodorant Co. deodorants for several years now and they have never let me down. I’m writing this blog post in the middle of a heatwave, with temperatures having reached 31 degrees here today. I’ve walked the kids to school and back (about 20 minutes each way, twice) and also sat in a hot car for ten minutes on the way to somewhere else and yes, I have sweated. But do I smell of sweat? Nope!

Two glass jars of The Natural Deodorant Co zero waste deodorants

I have recommended this zero waste natural deodorant to my family and several friends, and they also rave about it. And I know they still use it as they give me the empty pots as I like to reuse them.

I have included this brilliant natural deodorant in several previous posts about eco friendly swaps, and Plastic Free July but it’s about time I dedicated a whole post to them!

About The Natural Deodorant Co.

The Natural Deodorant Co. were founded in 2015 by Laurie and Brett, who were fed up of spending time and money on deodorants that just weren’t up to the job.

Every one of our products is 100% natural, free from preservatives, alcohol, artificial fragrance & palm oil. They are all certified cruelty-free and registered with The Vegan Society.

The Natural Deodorant Co.

A little goes a long way so one glass jar lasts ages — about three months for me. And they actually WORK, even though it’s made of all natural, non toxic ingredients.

It has glass bottom and a tin top so both parts are easily recyclable but they are also reusable if you wash them out well after use. For me, it’s the best zero waste natural deodorant oyt there.

These jars of creamy paste have minimal ingredients and no aluminium so they are so much better for your skin. It comes in a three ranges for different needs.

How To Apply this Zero Waste Natural Deodorant Balm

Applying The Natural Doodorant Co zero waste, plastic free deodorant

So how do you apply this zero waste natural deodorant? It’s so easy, but it does take a teeny bit of getting used to if you’re used to using a roll on or spray. Just scoop a little out of the glass jar with your finger. Then smooth in to the skin beneath your arm. It’s such a silky paste that it sinks in quickly, just like applying moisturiser.

I love not inhaling clouds of gas, like I used to with spray anti perspirant deodorants. I know it’s better for my lungs as well as my skin and the planet!

Which Natural Deodorant Should I Choose?

This all-natural deodorant is available in several scents (I’ve tried most of them and they all smell great) and three different strengths. So you can choose the best one for you.

Active is perfect for your busy days. They say “It’s perfect for your gym days, holidays and extra busy days. Our Active range was designed for demanding days when you need your deodorant to ‘go the extra mile’. This naturally powerful formula is best kept or occasional/sports use.” That’s what I’m wearing today!

Active ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Coconut Oil, Arrowroot Flour, Shea Butter, Magnesium Oxide, Olive Oil, Candelilla Wax, Kaolin, plus essential oils that vary depending on the fragrance you choose.

Clean is ideal the rest of the time. They say it’s “perfect for daily use on all skin types. A clever combination of antibacterial magnesium and sodium bicarbonate provide all-day odour protection. Coconut oil and shea butter nourish delicate underarm skin.”

Clean ingredients: Arrowroot Flour, Coconut Oil, Sodium Bicarbonate, Shea Butter, Olive Oil, Magnesium Oxide, Candelilla Wax, plus essential oils that vary depending on the fragrance you choose.

Gentle is best for sensitive skins. They say it “uses the antibacterial power of magnesium oxide and white clay to ensure even the most sensitive skin stays fresh. Magnesium oxide deodorises, while white clay helps to keep you dry. Rich, creamy shea butter protects your sensitive underarm skin.”

Gentle ingredients: Magnesium Oxide, Olive Oil, Arrowroot, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Kaolin, plus essential oils that vary depending on the fragrance you choose.

What If You’re Sensitive to Bicarbonate of Soda?

As you can see in the ingredients above, Sodium Bicarbonate is listed as the first ingredient for Active and the third for Clean. This makes it very effective, but it can be irritating to sensitive skin. If you are sensitive to Bicarbonate of Soda the Clean or Gentle versions may be better for you.

What About A Transition Period?

Some people report a transition period when swapping to a natural deodorant, as the body adjusts to not having antiperspirants. Personally I have never found this, but if you do, try to stick it out if you can! Every body is different but this one worked perfectly for me from the get go, which is why it’s my number 1!
